Just ask our Zip Hers Founder and ‘Fearless  Lady Leader’, Debbie Mercer, who just returned from hiking Palo Duro with 11 of her closest hiking friends from the Houston / Fort Bend area. Every year they choose a new hike and make new memories, explore new places, enrich each other's lives, and laugh along the way. WHY PALO DURO CANYON?

The second-largest canyon in the U.S., Palo Duro stretches over 120 miles, with a maximum depth of 1,000 feet. Its vibrant red rock cliffs, towering hoodoos, and winding trails make it an incredible place to escape and reconnect with nature. As you traverse the canyon, you'll be immersed in striking layers of red, orange, and lavender rock, rich in history and teeming with wildlife. The canyon is not only an outdoor playground but also a living museum of geological and cultural significance.

FAVORITE PALO DURO HIKING TRAILS:

LIGHTHOUSE TRAIL (6 MILES ROUND-TRIP)
  • This iconic trail leads to the famous Lighthouse rock formation, a towering natural pillar offering panoramic views of the canyon. It’s a moderately challenging hike with a few steep sections. Start early in the morning to avoid crowds and the midday heat, and don’t forget your camera—you’ll want to capture the stunning rock formations along the way.

    GIVENS, SPICER, & LOWRY RUNNING TRAIL (3.1 MILES ONE-WAY)
    • A popular trail for hikers and runners, this route features gentle inclines and offers a mix of scenic views and shaded sections. It’s a great way to experience the canyon’s diverse terrain without tackling too much elevation.
    • Tip: If you’re planning to run, use a hydration belt or pack. The trail can be dusty, so a bandana or buff might come in handy to cover your face on windier days. Check out these Nathan Hydration Belts!
    CAPITOL PEAK TRAIL (5.3 MILES ROUND-TRIP)
    • For those seeking a bit more of a challenge, this trail offers incredible views of Capitol Peak and the surrounding canyon. It has some narrow paths and rocky areas, so it's important to be confident in your footing.

      THE PASEO DEL RIO TRAIL (2 MILES ROUND-TRIP)

      • Perfect for an easy walk, this trail follows the river and is more shaded than many other paths in the park. Ideal for beginners or those looking to take a slower pace, it’s a lovely hike for spotting wildlife and enjoying the calming sounds of the water.
      • Tip: This is a great trail to unwind after tackling some of the more strenuous hikes. Pack a small picnic and enjoy it near the riverbank.

      PREPARE FOR THE HEAT: Even in the cooler months, Palo Duro Canyon can get warm. Carry at least one liter of water for every hour you plan to be out. Electrolyte drinks or snacks will help you stay hydrated.

      DRESS FOR SUCCESS: Lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing is essential.       KNOW YOUR LIMITS: Trails like the Lighthouse Trail can be deceptively tough, especially during summer. Don't hesitate to turn back if you're feeling overheated or fatigued.

      WATCH FOR WILDLIFE: Keep an eye out for deer, roadrunners, and the occasional snake. While most wildlife is harmless, it's good to be aware of your surroundings.

      RESPECT THE TRAILS: Stay on designated paths to preserve the natural environment and minimize erosion.
