Forming A Running Habit from ZIPHERS

DID YOU SLACK ON YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION?

Zip Hers is here with some tips to get back on track with your running resolutions!

DOES IT REALLY TAKE 22 DAYS TO FORM A NEW HABIT?

The truth of the matter is, it varies from person to person. While on average it takes more than 2 months before a new behavior becomes a habit, studies show it can take anywhere from 18 days to 254 days for people to form a new habit. Yikes!

So, there’s no magic number of days you have to work out in order to become a consistent runner.

Don’t let this dishearten you! One of the most important things to starting and maintaining a running habit is consistency. Don’t be too hard on yourself, you can run at your own pace, just get yourself out there and do it.

CONSISTENCY IS KEY - JUST GET OUT THERE!

One of the biggest hang-ups people have is that they aren’t going about their training in the right way. When you’re just beginning or getting back into a running habit, this can totally throw off your training. One of the hardest challenges you’ll confront is getting past that mental block. Here are some tips and tricks to help you do so.

  • Set a running schedule for yourself. Try starting with 2-3 days a week. Or 1-2 days a week if you’re a beginner.
  • Pick a consistent time and STICK TO IT. Even if you don’t feel confident you can run the whole way, just get out there.
  • If you can’t run the whole distance, don’t be too hard on yourself. Allow yourself walking breaks. The more you get out there and run, the more your tolerance will grow.

WHAT’S THE TAKEAWAY?

Start with a reasonable goal and slowly build that into a practice. Be realistic but be confident. It’s better than sitting on the couch, right?!
